Britons believe local businesses play an important role in local communities

Your local business is vital to the UK economy and 73% of the great British public agree according to figures released by the British Chamber of Commerce. They have started a campaign called “Business is good for Briton” which they launched yesterday 1st February 2012.

Hopefully, more emphasis will be placed on helping local business owners learn about using the internet because with more and more people searching online for products and services it is a great way to help them bring in enquiries for new business.  When you have a local presence online it is not only for people who live in your area but also for people who visit. I have a friend visiting Wales in a few weeks and as she is travelling alone she wanted my help finding a place to stay. We used the internet to find  a bed and breakfast, places to eat and events happening during the time she is staying.

If you are running events, if you are a restuarant or a b&b in Wales you have missed out on her business because we couldn’t find you online. However, there is another opportunity. Once she gets to Wales she may use her mobile phone to search for places within that local area and again, the places that will benefit are the ones who are online and being found on places like Google maps.

When I made the move from London to Luton I went from a furnished property to an unfurnished one and my first priority was to buy furniture. Yes, I used the internet and eBay for some of my shopping but the majority of what I purchased came from local shops.  My sons bed for example was purchased from a local place in High Town after searching the internet and mine from a local place near Town. I believe in staying local as much as I can because as local shops close down it really has a negative effect on the community as a whole.

The research conducted by the British Chamber of Commerce makes interesting reading and its worth getting on board with this campaign. I know there have been a few now all looking to kick start the UK’s economy using business as the key driver and I really love the local focus behind this one.
